The accident investigation is a highly skilled process that relies heavily upon training and experience. On scene evidence is scrutinized because the smallest detail is important. Available to the investigator post scene, are crush damage, photogrammetry, and CAD mapping. Our staff has investigated over 2,000 actual "crashes" in the field. Experience you might not find elsewhere.
There are many avenues of approach to reconstruct an accident. However, what steps that are taken rely heavily upon the initial on scene investigation and post accident investigation. "What happened"? This question, within reason can almost always be answered. Our goal, with every accident, is to answer, "the what happened". And we would not hesitate to inform you that it just couldn't be answered.
The results of a reconstruction needs to be displayed in a clear manner so that all observers are able to fully understand what is presented. For many years this has been effectively accomplished through the use of site photographs, and 2D drawings of the scene. By working closely with a reconstructionist, we are able to extend the traditional 2D drawing to a three-dimensional scene with the exact movements from the reconstructionist's data. All details of the animation are carefully reviewed by the reconstructionist to ensure the animation is an extension of the reconstruction and not just an artists impression of the events.
By now most people have been exposed to 3D graphics and animations in movies and on television. One of the biggest challenges of creating a scene and an animation for a case is to ensure that a juror does not confuse it for some "Hollywood effect". To reduce the occurrence of this, we create a scene with only the significant objects in it. This creates a simple scene that ensures the individuals viewing it will focus their attention on the events in the animation and not on other irrelevant items.
Most of the animations we create are a result of our reconstructions, but if you have been working with another reconstructionist, or you are a reconstructionist and want an animation for your case, we will work with you to create an animation from your data.

The best looking animation in the world is useless if it can't be viewed or isn't clear. At Visual Reconstructions our animations are typically rendered from several different viewpoints. We also will create the animation with vehicle speeds and/or positions overlayed on the screen to verify the reconstructionists calculations at any point in the animation (see image below). These animations can also be created with or without effects (i.e. smoke, fire, fog) visible. All animations are prepared and packaged into a simple interface for our reconstructionist to present using our laptop computer and projector.
